Chueca

From Traditional Neighbourhood to Contemporary Madrid Icon and Heart of the LGBTIQ+ Community.

For much of the 20th century, Chueca was synonymous with marginalisation: prostitution, drugs and crime shaped the image of this central Madrid neighbourhood. However, in the 1980s, a profound and almost unexpected transformation began. Around Plaza de Chueca, and thanks to pioneering initiatives such as a bookshop specialising in gay and lesbian literature, LGBTQ+ venues began to emerge, gradually transforming the neighbourhood’s appearance and identity.

These early venues were soon joined by community organisations, bars, restaurants, fashion boutiques and small design hotels. Over time, Chueca established itself as one of the great symbols of contemporary Madrid and as a centre of LGBTIQ+ life, becoming one of the city’s most sought-after neighbourhoods to live in—not only among members of the community. Today, however, the neighbourhood faces new challenges: gentrification, overtourism, the loss of social diversity and soaring housing prices.
