The Madrid of Goya and the Bourbons

After the deplorable end of the Habsburgs, a new dynasty is imported from Versailles: the Bourbons. Despite the ruin of the State coffers, the new monarchs get to work. The urban sanitation of Madrid begins according to models of the European Enlightenment. Public buildings, sumptuous squares, academies, headquarters of scientific institutions and much more are constructed. But just as with the Habsburgs, Spain does not escape the tragedies of history neither with the Bourbons: war against Napoleon, absolutist dictatorship, civil wars.

In this dramatic period between 1770 and 1820, Francisco Goya lived and worked in Madrid, where his meteoric rise took place, his transformation from craftsman into a brilliant artist. We take a walk through the places between the Royal Palace, Puerta del Sol and Paseo del Prado that marked his life, his work and that until today are part of the Bourbon legacy. If you wish, it is also possible to visit the Real Academia de San Fernando (Royal Academy of Fine Arts) or the Prado Museum to admire some testimonies of Goyesque art: cardboards for the royal tapestries, portraits and traditional painting, enigmatic works such as the Black Painting. Get to know one of the key figures in Madrid history and the ups and downs of a dynasty that to this day marks the destiny of Spain.
