A Guided Tour of the Spanish Royal Collection: One of Europe’s Great Art Museums
The Prado Museum—or simply “the Prado”. When it was founded in 1819 on the initiative of Queen Maria Isabel of Braganza, no one could have imagined that this modest gallery, displaying just a selection of works from the vast royal painting collection, would eventually become what it is today: a true paradise for art lovers, and especially for those interested in Spanish art, from the Middle Ages to the end of the 19th century.
The Prado is almost a world unto itself. It is easy to lose yourself in its galleries, and seeing and absorbing everything in a single visit is simply impossible. This is why having a professional guide makes it possible to create a clear and coherent route through the museum’s masterpieces. The visit explores some of the great treasures of Spanish painting, with artists such as El Greco, Velázquez, Zurbarán, Murillo and Goya, while also establishing a dialogue with some of the great masters of their time: Titian, Raphael, Rubens and Dürer.
Beyond the paintings themselves, the visit invites you to pay attention to the details: a gesture, the position of a foot, a hairstyle, a glance. Small clues that open the door to the countless stories hidden within the Prado’s works of art.
