Madrid, Landscape of light
UNESCO World Heritage Site: Art, Science and Nature in Enlightenment Madrid, between the Prado Museum and Retiro Park.
In 2021, UNESCO granted Madrid World Heritage status for the first time. The designation was awarded to the area between the Paseo del Prado and Retiro Park, an exceptional setting defined by the unique interplay of art, science and nature. This cultural landscape owes much of its character to the reforming spirit of the 18th-century Enlightenment.
The Enlightenment in Spain is closely linked to the arrival of the Bourbons on the Spanish throne in 1700. This dynasty, originally from France, looked to the cultural and scientific models of Europe as a reference. Its objective was clear: to modernise the country and project it into the future, at least in the fields of knowledge, the arts and urban planning. The most visible traces of this ambitious programme have survived to the present day and are concentrated precisely between the Prado and Retiro: the Royal Observatory of Madrid, the Royal Tapestry Factory, the Royal Botanical Garden, the Royal Spanish Academy and the Prado Museum, originally conceived as a Cabinet of Natural History.
This Enlightenment impulse was also expressed through the fine arts and the new monumental approach to urban planning. Along the Paseo del Prado, a true Bourbon boulevard, iconic landmarks such as the Cibeles, Neptune and Apollo fountains form a symbolic axis where reason, art and nature engage in harmonious dialogue.
It was an age of progress and enlightenment, but also of conflicts, wars and deep social tensions. As Francisco de Goya, the great artistic witness of the period, warned, “The sleep of reason produces monsters.” This visit invites you to travel back to that brilliant and contradictory era, exploring some of Madrid’s most beautiful monuments and discovering the light and shadows of the Enlightenment in Madrid
